Amazon Luna: Cloud Gaming in the Amazon Ecosystem

Amazon Luna is a cloud gaming platform developed by Amazon, announced in September 2020 and which went live on December 14, 2020. Luna is not like a gaming console or PC, it streams games from Amazon’s servers directly to the player, so all you need to play on Luna are an internet connection and any supporting device.

1. Functionality

Luna leverages cloud computing to process games on distant servers that stream video output to your screen in real time. This functionality allows for:

No need for a long download or update process

  • Near-instantaneous game access
Cross-Device Support: PC, Mac, Fire TV & Mobile
2. Game Library and Channels

Luna offers multiple game “channels” over which users can subscribe, paying for each channel on their own schedule:

Luna+: This represents the full catalog of games across many different genres.
Ubisoft+: Full-year use of over 100 games from UBISOFT, such as new launches.

  • Family Channel: games appropriate for all family members
  • Retro Channel: Games from former generations of gaming

While this channel-based system has greater flexibility, it may require several subscriptions in order to secure all the games you want.

3. Supported Devices and Controllers

Compatibility of Luna with devices :

  • Fire TV
  • Luna Controller

Although, it allows you to use Bluetooth controllers or a keyboard/mouse set up if you have one, Amazon also offers the Luna Controller that connects directly to the cloud so as to reduce latency.

4. Advantages of Amazon Luna
  • Quick and easy: No downloads, installations, or large amounts of storage space needed
  • Simplified Portability: The ability to play across different devices without setting back your progress,
  • Performance: Games are powered by cutting edge cloud infrastructure, so even low performing devices can play the most demanding games.
  • Global Footprint: During Loom’s BETA period, users were located in more than 50 countries across North America, South America, Europe and Asia
  • Integration: Works with Twitch, Alexa & Amazon Family integrations
5. Limitations and Challenges

Internet Dependency: Fast and stable connection required (recommended bandwidth 10 Mbps by Amazon)

  • Subscription Overlap: Deduct the cost for a couple of channel subscriptions
  • Library Gaps: Are missing several key games and publishers
Final Thoughts

While the game selection is limited and currently restricts channels to a few content partnerships, its use of Amazon services and well-thought-out design place it as an emerging contender in cloud gaming.

I can play a game on my FireTV and continue that game on my Fire Tablet. And that’s pretty cool.
