It felt like the future as soon as I got my Meta Quest 3s. The mostly clear visuals and fast performance, with that mix of fixed VR and passthrough AR imaging. A year into owning my headset, though, I slowly started to see a pattern. It was collecting more dust on my shelf than sweat around my face. So, I’m trying to sell it.
The Honeymoon Phase
I was ready for the Quest 3s when my buddy sent it to me for my birthday. I played games like Beat Saber and Aim VR as well as Epic Rollercoasters. It is cool but I’m good and don’t really need it. I still like old fashioned controllers.
Reality set in, literally. It was still a massive hunk of plastic on my head. My play sessions grew shorter. Plus, “look at this cool thing I can do” became old and “I will play next weekend MAYBE”. I will admit that watching a movie on it is pretty rad!
Why I’m Letting It Go
It was a combination of factors:
- Time commitment: VR is not just a controller you can pick up At times I just wanted something that can give me a quick fix.
- Content drought – There were some great games, but there weren’t enough of them and I wasn’t busy playing continual new releases.
- Other priorities: I wasn’t using the device enough to justify keeping it.
It was not a decision that I made easily but when I put it up for sale; I got this strange feeling of relief instead of guilt.
The Aftermath
I’m going to keep playing retro games on my TrimUI. Platforms where you play without putting something on your head are better in my humble opinion. Will I miss the headset sitting there, collecting dust and feeling bad for not using it? Not I won’t.
What I Learned
It may be replaced by Luna+ but Quest stands out to me as one of the best pieces of personal technology in existence, but I don’t think everyone will be buying them long-term. Although, personally, VR is a fun thing to share but maybe once or twice. Not on an a everyday basis. The act of trying to sell it reminds me that it’s ok to also walk away entirely or step back from tech that might even be cutting edge, but no longer fits into your life.
And who knows? Perhaps I will come back when the Meta Quest 5 is released.
